House Concurrent Resolution 70

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF MR. EDWARD ELLIOTT AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mr. Edward Elliott, a resident of Greenwood, Mississippi, departed this life Tuesday, January 5, 1999, causing great loss and suffering to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott, whose name appears on one of the bricks at the Leflore County Veteran's Monument, faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War I and received the World War I 75th Anniversary Commemorative Award; and

WHEREAS, a sharecropper and carpenter, Mr. Elliott was a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church for 48 years and was the recipient of the Deacon Award for long-time service to the church; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott was honored on his 100th birthday with a card from President Bill Clinton and recognized on the NBC morning news program, Today; and

WHEREAS, a native of Duck Hill, Mr. Elliott was a member of Masonic Lodge 342, where he served as chaplain and Honorary Worshipful Master; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott is survived by his eight children: Henry Elliott, Frank Elliott, James Elliott, Roy Elliott, Archie Elliott, Ollie Elliott, Minnie Whittaker and Glenda Crain; 31 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren and 58 great-great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and pay tribute to such outstanding men as Mr. Edward Elliott, who was a man of God and a loving father:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. Edward Elliott and extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Edward Elliott and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
